Your Opportunity
Stantec is a leading global provider of professional consulting services in the fields of environmental sciences, engineering, and archaeology. We are currently seeking experienced Archaeology Technicians to join our dynamic team on a project basis.
As an Archaeology Technician, you will play a crucial role in supporting our field programs by assisting with data collection and analysis. This position offers the opportunity to work on a variety of projects, including solar fields, residential developments, wetland restorations, major urban revitalization projects, pipelines, transmission lines, transportation projects, and excavation and investigations of cemeteries.
This hourly, on-call position will support the archaeological fieldwork needs of the Midwest/Great Lakes region, particularly Illinois, Michigan, and northern Indiana. This position requires the ability to work outdoors in urban and remote locations and for extended periods under all weather conditions, often traversing rugged terrain. Stantec is committed to workplace safety and maintaining safe work practices. Extensive travel may be required.
Location:
While based in the Chicago metro area, projects include a mix of local and out of town field projects. Candidates living across Illinois, western Michigan, and northern Indiana are encouraged to apply.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Conduct archaeological fieldwork, archaeological monitoring, and data collection for historic architectural surveys.
- Work under the supervision of a field director or crew lead in Illinois and neighboring states
- Occasional laboratory duties may be available on a project specific basis.
- Travel extensively to the assigned office or to project sites. Paid travel time, standard GSA per diem, and single occupancy hotel provided for non-local projects.
- Prioritize safety in field and laboratory practices.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
- Conduct Phase I survey, Phase II testing, Phase III data recovery, archaeological monitoring, and data collection for historic architectural surveys.
- Perform laboratory duties including artifact processing, classification, and curation, as well as artifact photography, database management, mapping, and report layout.
- Maintain the ability to travel to and from onsite jobs and Chicago area office locations as needed.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to operate motorized vehicles.
- Must be able to pass a drug test and background check.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, or related field preferred. Minimum high school diploma.
- Previous experience in a field school or CRM setting as an archaeologist, surveyor, or similar role preferred.
- Technical expertise or specialty within Archaeology/Anthropology is advantageous.
- Familiarity with recording field data using ESRI’s Field Maps is highly desirable.
- Working knowledge of Midwest/Great Lakes archaeology and field methods is preferred.
