Your Opportunity

Stantec is seeking an Archaeologist with demonstrated experience in Ohio, Michigan, and/or adjacent states. This is a career opportunity for an archaeologist to support a growing cultural resources team for a leading environmental consulting firm. This team provides Section 106/NEPA analyses, technical studies, and project permitting for a wide variety of private and federal, state, and local government clients in the Midwest and Great Lakes regions of the United States. 

The individual will lead cultural resources projects, assist senior staff with business development opportunities, and provide successful and independent management of archaeological resources projects, including direction of field studies and assembly, supervision, and direction of field teams, artifact cataloging, and report writing.

Work will be a mix of a typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time, and archaeological fieldwork involving travel. The work may require shovel testing, test unit excavation, soil profile description, artifact analyses, preparation of detailed field notes and archaeological site records. You must be able and willing to work outdoors in remote locations and for extended periods under all weather conditions, often traversing rugged terrain. Must demonstrate awareness for workplace safety; and be willing to work independently when conditions are appropriate or with limited supervision. 

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Project archaeologist/field director for cultural resource investigations for a variety of clients and sectors including work in the utilities industry (power and gas), transportation, renewable energy, and local governments.
  • Responsible for management and supervision of cultural resource projects, including Phase I archaeological surveys, Phase II testing, records searches, site evaluations using NRHP criteria, and construction monitoring.
  • Preparation of archaeological reports that meet Section 106, and various SHPO standards
  • Interact and interface with clients and environmental regulators
  • Responsible for planning and conducting assignments/ projects having broad scope for independent accomplishment and coordination of difficult tasks.
  • Contribute to proposals, project scope and cost development, pre-qualifications, and relationship building with clients and prospective clients independently or under the direction and mentorship of senior staff.
  • Participate in Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) Policies, Procedures, Standards and Guidelines in the execution of all work.
  • Provide supervision, training, technical direction and mentoring to more junior staff
  • Apply technical and common-sense methods to develop creative, effective, and economical solutions to address current and potential project issues.
  • Conduct peer reviews of routine work by colleagues or more junior practitioners

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Meets the qualifications as described in the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualification Standards for Archeology and Historic Preservation.
  • Registered Professional Archaeologist (RPA) or qualifications that meet requirements to become an RPA.
  • Professional writing, problem solving, and communication skills.
  • Experience leading and conducting cultural resource investigations in the Midwest region of the US.
  • Ability to build and maintain productive professional and personal networking relationships.
  • Willingness to continuously improve technical performance.
  • Willingness to travel.
  • Champions new ideas and initiatives and creates an environment that supports creativity and innovation.
  • Self-awareness of technical and/or professional abilities and the ability to determine when assistance from senior staff is needed.
  • Disciplined approach to project execution and technical excellence.
  • Ability to provide written and verbal direction on project delivery.
  • Ability to convey safety information to field staff.
  • Ability to use field data collection equipment such as GPS and Environment Systems Research Institute (ESRI) Collector and Survey 1-2-3.
  • Good driving record and valid driver’s license required.

Education and Experience

Required:

  • Master’s degree in anthropology/archaeology or a related discipline from an accredited university.
  • Minimum of 5 years and preferably 10 years of progressively responsible cultural resources positions, including supervisory, management, and team-oriented experience.
  • Demonstrated experience leading and managing field crews and knowledge of compliance under the NHPA and state laws.
  • Strong skills in technical writing.
  • Experience with digital data collection methods and techniques and use of GIS.

Preferred Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience with routine state and federal agency communications and coordination.
  • Experience working with Tribal consulting parties and observers.
