Your Opportunity

This position will serve as part of the leadership team for the US West Transportation Business Line and will report to the US West Regional Business Leader. The position will require a strategic planning focus, knowledge of the local transportation markets, and strong communication skills supported by consistent collaboration to help build the transportation design and CM business within the following specific key geographies and market sectors:

Your Key Responsibilities

The position will enhance Stantec’s ability to win work during all aspects of a project’s lifecycle from planning, program management, design, construction management, construction inspection through to commissioning and close-out.

TRANSPORTATION DESIGN AND CM TEAM MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES (10%  Time Commitment)

  • Assess the existing condition of the transportation group for each of the respective geographies and create a plan for structure and missing leadership with focus being on the PM/CM/RE level candidate. As part of the growth and transition period for transportation in these markets currently under-represented, this position may require stepping into certain roles not currently being filled by others.
  • Management (“client manager”) of key transportation clients to include: NDOT and RTC of Southern Nevada with others identified in the future as part of the overall strategic planning process.  This role could include a role as a Project Director-Project Principal- Project Manager on a transportation project, client meetings/relationships and politics.
  • General oversight and assistance to the BCOL with particular attention to schedule and budget issues for any and all projects, especially those that are problematic.
  • Lead efforts to continue improvements in QA/QC processes and fostering a culture of being cost effective and thorough in delivering projects. Assist with formal project reviews of large or complex transportation projects on a quarterly basis to identify and mitigate potential risks.
  • Serve as the direct supervisor of 5-10 senior design and CM staff in the respective transportation practice (PM, BCPL, and Senior Transportation staff within the US West geography). Provide input into the employee Career Development and Performance Review, and Compensation and Bonus processes for direct reports.
  • Provide support and leadership throughout the Region in support of a “zero safety incident” culture.
  • Encourage cooperation, collaboration, and sharing of skills and workload between transportation staff located in various Transportation Practice Area Business Centers across the company and in other practice areas, where considered appropriate (i.e Reno, Phoenix, Anchorage, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Honolulu).
  • Visit local Stantec offices throughout the Region on a minimum of a quarterly basis to provide transportation leadership and collaboration with the local business line leadership and staff.
PROJECT RESPONSIBILITIES (50% Time Commitment)

The position will be a minimum of 50% billable on projects. The position will interface and advise the client and project team, manage key staff and contract risk, and assist with the review of technical documents or project deliverables to meet the needs of the overall project success. Potential roles on projects could include Project Director, Project Principal, Project Manager or Construction Manager.

BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT RESPONSIBILITIES (40% Time Commitment)

A major responsibility of this position is assisting in the strategic planning, identifying specific opportunities and teaming partners, executing a strong opening/middle/end game process, and ultimately winning key pursuits through hands-on involvement on key opportunities across the respective region and geographic locations/markets. 

  1. General Stantec Transportation Group Promotion (10% Time Commitment)
    • Responsibilities will be undertaken in collaboration with the local/regional leadership to assist with increasing the Stantec branding and market recognition as a transportation industry leader.  Responsibilities will include:
    • Increase Stantec’s industry profile through regular interaction with potential clients and other consultants as well as participation in industry organizations, such as APTA, DBIA, ACEC, CMAA, WTS, and other relevant regional organizations.
    • Identify and track potential projects and teaming opportunities for conventional design, construction management, design/build and P3 opportunities through strong client liaison and working with key teaming partners.
    • Identify at least one additional transportation client that will be your responsibility to generate new business based on a strategic account management plan identified during the strategic planning process.
    • Collaborate and coordinate with the Stantec Smart Mobility market leadership to assist with increasing our market presence throughout the geographic region.
    • Identify key PM’s within each of the key locations, and directly assist in the hiring and interview process.
Business Development On Specific Key Opportunities (30% Time Commitment) 

  • Responsibilities will be focused on assisting in the strategic planning, and execution of a strong opening/middle/end game process. This focus will lead to a higher success rate, efficient M&BD costs, and overall growth. Responsibilities include:
    • Commitment to the consistent use of Pipeline for all opportunities.
    • Collaboration with the marketing team and business development managers.
    • Support in helping develop the value proposition and win theme for success through regular client meetings and strategic planning.
    • Assist with technical proposal writing.
    • Technical oversight of the proposal process including hands-on participation with fee and schedule negotiations.
    • Leadership and support in identifying key teaming partners, assisting in the development of the overall project delivery team, and collaboration with other  BC’s and geographies in expanding Stantec’s market share.
AREA MANAGER EXPECTATIONS AND KEY PERFORMANCE METRICS

This position is considered a key leadership position in the growth of transportation throughout the US West, and requires the day to day performance and overall success to be accomplished through the highest ethical standards. The key metrics for success in this position are as follows:

  • Successfully meet the approved Fiscal Year Business Plan in coordination with the transportation BCOL’s. 
  • Primary focus should be on Operating Income, Net Revenue, GM as a Percentage of Net Revenue, and MB&D Spend.
  • Successfully identify, and directly participate in the hiring of (2) key hires at the Project Manager or Construction Manager level or higher.
  • Identify, provide leadership, and successfully win (4) transportation design projects and (1) construction management project with contract value in-excess of $1M each. 
  • Identify, provide leadership, and successfully win (1) transportation project with contract value in-excess of $5M.
  • Identify, provide leadership, and successfully win (1) transportation project with contract value in-excess of $10M.
  • Zero safety incidents.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Ability to effectively discuss project issues with contractor, project team and clients, including ability to resolve conflict situations.
  • Takes initiative on tasks and in coordinating with other members of the project team, obtaining and sharing necessary information.
  • Strong organizational skills and understanding of task assignment and schedule.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to solve problems using sound professional judgment, creativity, and innovation.
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record required. 

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Business, or related field. Minimum of 20+ years in engineering and/or construction management experience. PE preferred.

Typical office environment working with computers at a desk for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
