Your Opportunity
Stantec is seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated Biophysical Sciences Co-op Student to join our Aquatic and Terrestrial Ecology teams. We have offices across BC and Yukon (Burnaby, Sidney, Kelowna, Prince George, Quesnel, Terrace and Whitehorse), with project work throughout Western Canada and beyond. Work will be mainly in the field for spring and summer season but may involve a variety of tasks depending on project requirements. This role begins as a field season term. However, depending on work volumes and performance, there is a possibility to extend to full-time permanency. Benefits and full-time potential will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Field work including environmental site assessments; construction monitoring support; soil sampling, groundwater monitoring and sampling; and aquatics and terrestrial monitoring support.
- Participating in various project tasks including researching and compiling and evaluating project data.
- Available to travel away from home, staying in hotels or camps, working 12-hour days (including evenings and weekends) under a variety of conditions for 14 days at a time or longer.
- Comply with Stantec's safety policies and procedures. Prioritize safety in all tasks.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
- Familiarity with biological field methods, such as minnow trapping, beach seining, fish identification, sediment sampling, and the use of tools such as water quality meters.
- Experience with wildlife, freshwater or marine fish, and/or vegetation identification skills, and with sampling techniques (soil, water, sediment) is an asset.
- Well-developed computer skills such as Microsoft Excel and Word.
- Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Strong work ethic and ability to multi-task, prioritize, and take direction.
- Able to work in a collaborative team environment and under deadlines in remote wilderness and outdoor settings.
- Able to lift and move equipment up to 23kg (50lbs) (i.e., carrying field equipment and samples).
- Able to endure long days of physically and mentally challenging field work while maintaining a positive, solutions-focused attitude.
- Excellent navigational skills and ability to troubleshoot equipment and solve problems in the field.
- Able to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Valid Driver’s License and clean driver’s abstract.
Education and Experience
- Minimum of two years of post-secondary in an environmental field. Recent graduates (i.e., education completed between May 2024 and May 2025) are also eligible for this position.
- The following are assets: electrofishing certificate; Intermediate First Aid and Transportation Endorsement certificate; UTV training; Pleasure Craft Operator Card; Swiftwater Rescue Technician; Marine Emergency Duties A1.
The expected start date of this position is May 5, 2025. This position will be hired initially for a four (4) month contract with potential for extension; candidates available beyond September 2025 should inform the hiring manager.
Work Environment
Stantec British Columbia's standard work week is 37.5 hours. This position is eligible for overtime in the office and field for hours worked in accordance with British Columbia's labour laws. Our typical office environment involves working with computers and remaining relatively sedentary. Stantec offers a flexible work arrangement for desk-based tasks including working from Stantec office locations, working from home, or a mix depending on the situation. Field work may include exposure to inclement weather, and travel through rough and remote terrain, while carrying equipment.
