Your Opportunity

The CAD Specialist will work with roadway engineers and project managers to continually monitor and produce transportation roadway drawings.  Innovative ways to improve production standards and quality will be expected. The CAD Specialist will perform a variety of tasks which will include CAD team leadership, quality control, management of templates & standards, teaching, in addition to assisting with the preparation of deliverables for transportation projects across a variety of roadway projects You will be an important Stantec team member that is shaping the future of California and North America. One of the first long-term high-profile assignments would be working on California High Speed Rail Design for Merced to Madera.

Your Key Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Lead Roadway Engineer your key responsibilities will include:

  • Establish roadway CAD standards, file structures, roadway reference files and workspaces for projects with internal (Stantec Worksharing) and external sub consultant team members.
  • Assist in establishing work plans and cost & schedule estimates for delivery of conceptual and design CAD models and drawings.
  • Oversee and coordinate CAD modelling & production team during development and production of these drawings. This includes staff resource allocations & reallocations over the course of projects and pursuits.
  • Coordinates CAD modelling & production team with other disciplines, consultants and subconsultants during projects and pursuits.
  • Maintains communication with other CAD Manager and Discipline Leads within the organization to ensure consistent practices & standards and for resource collaboration discussions.
  • Coordinate, track and log QA/QC and design decision related documentation for project deliverables – carefully following both Stantec and client quality requirements. This may include performing regular quality reviews of CAD models and drawings.
  • Attend periodic CAD staff work assignment meetings and technical CAD workshops / sessions for CAD staff. Also, encourage CAD staff to present CAD related topics at these meetings for good engagement and team morale.
  • Stay current with new CAD technology, trends, tools, and practices in the industry through reading technical articles and attending occasional workshops & seminars.
  • Regularly review and become familiar with CAD standards of both Stantec and Stantec’s clients.
  • Responsible for managing and regularly maintaining a functional library of transportation roadway CAD standards, documents, templates, sample drawings & details and other supporting files which correspond to Stantec’s and clients’ CAD standards.
  • Assist with identifying and coordinating software training for CAD staff when required. This includes self-guided web-based training as well as formal in class training.
  • Assist Stantec IT with monitoring CAD staff hardware and software inventory and advises CAD staff when new software updates and roll outs are required.
  • Occasionally develop new CAD standards – including guidelines documents, templates, sample drawings and supporting files – for new projects / pursuits. These may be similar to Stantec or client standards.
  • Occasionally maintains project CAD-related data on Stantec project servers or web-based platforms over the course of projects and pursuits.
  • Oversee and coordinate final archiving of CAD, model, and other design related documents / files at the completion of projects / pursuits.
  • Assist CAD staff with CAD file and model troubleshooting when required
  • Provide active mentoring to CAD staff within department. 
  • Minimal travel may be required for project set ups within California.  Virtual meetings will be used as much as possible.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Effective communication skills and aptitude for leadership of the transportation roadway CAD group.
  • Strong ability to effectively identify and discuss project issues within project teams and at times present in front of clients and stakeholders as required on a project-by-project basis.
  • Excellent time-management skills and ability to work independently. Excellent communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Understanding of project scoping, task identification and resource assignments, scheduling, budgeting and efficient use of time and resources.
  • A willingness to provide mentoring and share technical knowledge with junior designers to support the growth and technical excellence of the team. 
  • Thorough understanding of applicable design guidelines and codes for relevant jurisdictions. Caltrans experience required. California High Speed Rail experience a definite plus. 
  • Strong understanding and proficiency in the use of relevant design software, which includes Microstation (Caltrans, CHSR, Metrolink) and AutoCAD(Most other Agencies and Private Work) Knowledge of Civil3D is a plus. A good understanding of Navis Works (or similar visualization tools) and Revit is a plus. QC-QA Reviews will be done using Bluebeam Review.
  • Strong knowledge of rail and transit, highways, local roads, and utilities. 
  • Strong eye for detail and understanding of quality management systems.
  • Proficient in managing in a ProjectWise environment is a plus.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment on projects.
  • Some As-Built drawings are still done with manual drafting. Manual drafting background a definite plus.

Education and Experience

  • Engineering or Architecture Design Degree or Drafting Diploma is desired. A minimum of 10 years of directly related project experience is a must. Additional Experience may be substituted for diploma or degree. 

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Stantec will provide you with an ergonomically designed workstation with a minimum of two high-definition monitors.  A hybrid work schedule can be discussed for the right candidate.
