Your Opportunity

Stantec is seeking a mid-to-senior level Certified Building Official capable of leveraging their expertise in building department functions to support the adoption and enforcement of building codes, standards, and policies in communities throughout the US. The new staff member will provide technical input, project management, building code analyses, resilience policy review, and technical writing for a diverse team of engineers, architects, building officials, scientists and planners. The new hire should be capable of proactive project management both internally with staff, across private and NGO partners, and directly with local, state and federal clients. The role will be responsible for final delivery of products that are on budget, on time, and meet or exceed client expectations. This role includes coordination with clients on deliverable timelines and facilitation of technical reviews with SMEs. The new hire will be responsible for adhering to internal and client protocols for periodic project reporting, continuous safety assessments, and assist with the mentoring of staff. The new staff member will work with other Stantec managers to assign staffing priorities, respond to RFPs, and evaluate business development opportunities. This hire should have a strong technical research background with the ability to summarize findings in a succinct and thorough manner which can be understood by other technically proficient individuals and, at times, laymen as well. Strong communications skills including PowerPoint presentations, report preparations, and technical emails are required. A general interest in resilience policy, climate change, hazard mitigation, emergency management and building science is preferred.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluating adoption and implementation of hazard-resistant building codes, specifications, and/or standards
  • Researching existing adopted codes, specifications, and/or standards for communities throughout the US to identify opportunities for increased resilience
  • Developing fact sheets and trainings to increase workforce capabilities and efficiencies for building departments at State, Local, Tribal and Territorial levels
  • Researching technical government and private sector documents on building codes, insurance, and mutual aid
  • Providing interpretation of government requirements including resilience policies, building codes and floodplain ordinances
  • Summarizing technical documents/requirements into layman’s terms through written and verbal communication
  • Managing the preparation of technical reports and presentations which summarize findings
  • Designating tasks and responsibilities to internal staff, as well as partners and subconsultants
  • Providing technical writing and formatting reviews of key deliverables
  • Executing project management requirements including project reporting and safety assessments
  • Contributing to RFPs and business development

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Willing to be a team player who leads a diverse team of professionals
  • Ability to work flexible hours to respond to immediate project needs

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experienced in codes and standards development process including committee participation
  • Familiarity with building inspections including post-disaster or post-incident assessments
  • Knowledge of CBC Chapter 7a, IWUIC, NFPA, and relevant fire hazard codes and standards is a plus
  • Understanding of Mutual Aid processes including EMAC and IMAC

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management or Related Bachelor’s degree
  • Certified Building Official (CBO) or similar qualification
  • Minimum of 3-10 years’ experience
