Our Code and Life Safety team within Building Specialty Services at Stantec offers specialized Building and Fire Code consulting services on a wide array of projects, from work in existing heritage buildings to advising on the fire, life safety, and accessibility features of new building designs, from airports to hospitals and everything in between. Your Opportunity
We are actively seeking for a Code Consulting Co-op Student to join our growing Building Specialty Services team in either our Ottawa, ON or Markham, ON offices for a minimum 8-month commitment (could be split over two 4-month terms S25/F25 or S25/W26), commencing in May 2025.
Your Key Responsibilities
The Code Consulting Co-op Student will be responsible for but not limited to the following:
- Assisting the Code and Life Safety team with various project tasks, including analysis to applicable Building and Fire Codes and calculations related to spatial separation, occupant load, and egress analyses.
- Assisting in the preparation of technical reports and assessment of drawings.
- Assisting in project administration including formatting and compiling reports, gathering information, managing data files, drafting proposals, and drafting correspondence.
- Participating in site visits, when required.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
- Be curious about the how buildings and people behave in the event of fire
- Have an interest in working within a multi-disciplinary architectural and engineering team
- Have strong verbal and written communication skills
- Have strong interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate and work in a team environment.
- Be proactive and creative
- Be a fast learner, with the ability to adapt
- Be familiar with Building and Fire Codes and related standards (preferred)
Education and Experience
- In progress toward earning a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Architecture or Engineering, with a minimum of 2 years of undergraduate coursework
Various disciplines can pursue Code Consulting as a career. Past and current team members include graduates with degrees in Fire Safety/Protection, Architecture, Civil, Structural, Mechanical, Systems Design, and Chemical Engineering.)
