Your Opportunity

Are you looking for a chance to gain experience in the natural resources industry while working outdoors as part of a dedicated and talented team? Stantec is seeking passionate and energetic individuals with an interest in land management, ecology, and ecosystem restoration who are looking to gain valuable career skills working out of our De Pere, WI office location. Successful applicants will receive training related to natural areas management techniques, ecosystem restoration methods, office and field safety, interpretation of project designs and plans, equipment operation, and use of technology as part of their employment. Learn from our dedicated team of experts while working on long-term projects to conserve, restore, and manage prairies, wetlands, woodlands, and other native habitats of the upper Midwest. This position is paid, 40+ hours per week for a limited, seasonal employment term.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Working with field crews to carry out tasks related to ecosystem restoration and management on sites ranging from one to 100s of acres.
  • Specific job tasks include invasive species identification and control (herbicide application, cutting, and mowing), native seeding and planting, installation of erosion control best management practices, prescribed burning, and similar land management tasks. Depending on experience and proficiency, equipment operation and tools to conduct the above tasks may include the use of light and heavy-duty trucks and trailers, chainsaws, brush saws, herbicide sprayers, ATVs / UTVs, and tractors, with various implements.
  • Willingness to learn and apply new skills while conducting field tasks, such as plant identification, invasive species control methods, ecological restoration techniques, and natural area assessments.
  • Assisting crew leaders and project scientists with collection and documentation of field and written/tabular data for various restoration tasks.
  • Implementing a safety-first mindset and applying all established health, safety, security, and environment (HSSE) standards during all office and field operations.
  • Travel 25% of the time.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

Required:

  • Effective communicator and a collaborative mindset.
  • Organized and capable of following work assignments with attention to detail.
  • Ability to read and interpret herbicide labels and Safety Data Sheets and apply herbicides following label instructions and safety procedures.
  • Commitment to producing high quality in-field work products.
  • Ability to walk 4-6 miles per day over rough terrain carrying up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather conditions.
  • Ability to travel regularly during the field season.
  • Ability to obtain state Pesticide Applicators licenses within one month, including applicable categories for herbicide application in natural areas and aquatic environments.
  • Positive, safety-first attitude.
  • Possess a valid driver's license with a good driving record.

Preferred:

  • Basic knowledge of Great Plains/Midwest native and invasive species, plant identification, natural areas, and ecology.
  • Familiarity with natural areas management techniques including herbicide applications, cutting / mowing, controlled burning, and native planting.
  • Ability to operate and conduct routine preventative maintenance on a variety of equipment and tools that includes light and heavy-duty trucks and trailers, chainsaws / brush saws, backpack herbicide sprayers, ATVs / UTVs, and tractors.
  • ATV / UTV and chainsaw safety training.
  • Valid commercial driver’s license and/or Federal DOT Medical card.
  • Previous experience utilizing iPads and familiarity with computers, tablets, and GPS units.

Education and Experience

  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Pursuing or have obtained Undergraduate or Associates Degree in an environmental discipline.
