Your Opportunity

We are a multidiscipline team working across the three northern Territories (Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut) in multiple sectors for a variety of clients. Our projects vary in size ranging from small commercial developments to light industrial, mining, government, community, institutional and private sector facilities. 

An exciting opportunity exists for an energetic, experienced technical leader to lead the Northern electrical engineering team. We have three Northern offices in Whitehorse, Yellowknife & Iqaluit. The three offices work together and share resources. The Electrical Engineering Team Lead position can be based in either Whitehorse, Yukon or Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. 

The successful candidate will lead our electrical group and will work closely with Business Centre (BC) leadership to deliver quality technical assignments and attract, develop, and retain qualified staff that demonstrate design and technical excellence. Reporting to the Business Centre Operations Leader, you will collaborate with the Northern Territories leadership team to market discipline specific design and technical expertise to clients.

Your Key Responsibilities

As the Electrical Engineering Team Lead, you will have the opportunity to work on multi-disciplinary projects in various sectors including Healthcare, Airports, Mining, Government and Commercial. Our highly experienced, multi-disciplinary team specializes in buildings and infrastructure design. We connect the people, places, and resources that take a project from concept to reality. 

Our designs integrate new technologies with proven solutions. Energy efficiency and alternative energy solutions are routinely incorporated into our designs.  

  • Lead and grow the electrical engineering team in the Northern Territories.
  • Collaborate with other engineering and business leaders across the region.
  • Oversee and enhance the quality of projects, documentation, and processes in the discipline.
  • Attract, develop, and retain qualified professionals to contribute to the discipline.
  • Interact with counterparts across the business lines.
  • Partner with other leaders to review and manage workload, staffing, recruiting, career development and technical development.
  • Promote and enhance design excellence, professional standards and best practices within the region.
  • Participate in the Business Centre’ team building process for pursuits & projects, providing PMs with appropriate staff, either from within the BC or from other BCs.
  • Together with other leaders, implement the methodologies within the region for the creation and review of work plans, independent reviews, design reviews and technical reviews on all projects using Stantec frameworks.
  • Take timely corrective action on any projects that encounter technical challenges to avoid claims and takes responsibility for mitigating any claims in the region.
  • Lead risk mitigation efforts across full portfolio of projects.
  • Collaborate with Stantec’s HSSE team in the development of discipline specific hazard assessments, safe work practices, planned job observations, safety training, and incident investigations within the discipline pertaining to the work of the staff.
  • Assist leaders in the delivery of the Business Centre’s employee compensation, career development, performance reviews and succession planning.
  • Increase the visibility of the Electrical Engineering team across the company.
  • Work with other local disciplines, including architecture, transportation, power and energy, and civil engineering to deliver high quality design projects.
  • Collaborate with buildings architects, planners, mobility planners, and landscape architects to develop and advance thought leadership both in Canada and as part of the larger team.
  • Lead the electrical aspects of the project development cycle including client engagement, preparing fee proposals, and project delivery.
  • Engage regularly with key clients to discuss current projects and evaluate firm performance, as well as identify other business opportunities either with current clients or through referrals, focusing on business development efforts and strategic pursuits.
  • Perform other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.

  • Demonstrated skills to create and implement innovative and effective client solutions and integrated deliverables in alignment with business objectives.
  • Proven experience in building and maintaining relationships with clients, business leaders and team members.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and develop strong internal relationships, fostering a culture of collaboration.
  • Desire to succeed, be enthusiastic and possess a high degree of integrity.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in relevant drafting/design software such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, Photoshop, InDesign, and Adobe Acrobat is an asset, but not a requirement.
  • Thorough understanding of codes, legal, and design requirements with significant local jurisdictional experience and established contacts.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. Licensed Professional Engineer with a minimum of 10 years of experience required.
  • Typical work environment is in an office-based setting. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
