Your Opportunity

You will perform environmental assessment and remediation tasks to support environmental investigation and remediation projects at sites with contamination by materials such as solvents, petroleum fuels, metals, and PCBs.  You have the opportunity to join a dynamic team working on large, technically engaging, and impactful projects located at active and inactive petroleum refining and storage facilities and other commercial and industrial facilities.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Perform and document environmental field work primarily at commercial/industrial facilities. Duties for this position may be associated with railyards, current/former refineries, petroleum processing/storage facilities, and former manufactured gas plant (MGP) facilities, as well as other commercial and industrial facilities in urban, rural or undeveloped locations.
  • Conduct field work that includes, but is not limited to collecting samples of soil, sediment, water, and air; overseeing drilling of soil borings and installation of monitoring wells; performing hydraulic conductivity tests; excavation monitoring; use of instrumentation; overseeing subcontractors; and coordinating complex field tasks with multiple staff and subcontractors.
  • Prepare site maps, soil boring logs, well construction diagrams, geologic cross-sections, potentiometric surface maps, and groundwater flow models.
  • Analyze field data and prepare technical summaries.
  • Complete applicable company and client-required health & safety training (including OSHA-required training) and follow health & safety policies and procedures.
  • Follow established standards, policies, procedures, and guidelines to complete assignments.
  • This position is within a larger environmental services team and will likely require providing support to multiple Stantec offices (NJ and PA).
  • Travel is required.  Work hours may be irregular and include overnight and weekend work shifts.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Be willing to learn new skills for conducting field work, to work independently outdoors for long hours in potentially inclement weather conditions and be flexible in undertaking work assignments.
  • Have excellent verbal communication and technical writing skills.
  • Be conscientious, detail-oriented, and disciplined.
  • Build and maintain productive professional and personal networking relationships within your technical team.
  • Manage multiple project responsibilities simultaneously and track priorities.
  • Be proud to take ownership of work, exhibit a problem-solving mindset, and approach tasks with curiosity.
  • Be proficient in commonly used software (e.g., Word, Excel, etc.). Experience using gINT, MODFLOW, AQTESOLV, ArcGIS, and/or AutoCAD is a plus.
  • Pre-employment physical and periodic drug testing is required.
  • Good driving record and valid driver's license are required.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Geology, Environmental Science, or related field. Ability to procure Geologist in Training (GIT) or Professional Geologist (PG) certification is preferred, but not required.
  • 0 to 3 years of experience conducting environmental assessment and remediation work.
  • 40-hour HAZWOPER (OSHA Hazardous Worker) certification and current 8-hour refresher certification are desired, but not required.

Other Considerations

  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC Card) is required for access to jobsites and candidates must meet Federal TSA background check criteria and be able to obtain a TWIC Card.
  • The position will involve field work (outdoors) and the work will include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
  • Workdays may be 12+ hours long and work hours may be irregular and include overnight shifts and weekends.
  • Field work will require use of a respirator and protective clothing depending on job-site conditions.
  • Ability to lift and move items and equipment throughout the workday weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time and traverse uneven surfaces in rough terrain.
  • Ability to bend, twist, stoop, and kneel throughout the workday.
  • Ability to climb up and down a ladder.

Typical office environment tasks will also be part of the work, including working with computers and working at a desk for long periods of time.
