Your Opportunity 

We have an opportunity for a Field Services Co-op Student (8 Month Term) to join our Calgary Community Development group. As a Coop Student, you will be working on Residential, Commercial, and Institutional infrastructure projects on our Field Services Team, as part of our Community Development Business Centre. The primary responsibilities for this role are varied; however generally involve the observation, recording and reporting of construction activities for compliance with standard specifications and design intent in Calgary and in surrounding communities. 

Your Key Responsibilities

As the successful candidate you will be working within project teams and will be responsible for, but not limited to the following:

  • Review and interpretation of approved engineering drawings.
  • Review and cross reference of construction grade sheets for issuance to contractors.
  • Observation of infrastructure installation for compliance with specification.
  • Daily on-site construction coordination, including liaison with contractors, City of Calgary / other Municipalities staff, geotechnical consultants and construction surveyors, as well as other specialized consultants.
  • Recording of all daily activity on construction projects, including material used, daily labour, equipment and site progress.
  • Review, coordination and implementation of erosion and sediment controls on active work sites.
  • Preparation of cost analysis and recommendations of costs for senior staff consideration with respect to erosion and sediment control projects.
  • Meet, review and report to the project team on construction status, issues and concerns.
  • Actively participate in the implementation of safety controls and promotion of safety in the workplace.
  • Candidates must be prepared to work extended hours and weekends. 

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Very attentive to details and well organized.
  • Ability to work with others on large projects and committed to teamwork, in a very fast paced and dynamic work environment. 
  • Ability to solve problems using sound professional judgment, creativity, and innovation.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to lift and move items and equipment up to 50 lbs is a requirement for this position

Education and Experience 

  • Enrolled in a civil engineering technologist, municipal design or project management / construction project management program or registered in an engineering undergraduate program, preferably with a Civil Engineering major, in 1st, 2nd or 3rd year of their program.
  • A valid driver’s license (upgraded to full class 5 driver’s license, no GDL).


Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include long days (12 hours), with last minute schedule changes and exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
