Your Opportunity
Stantec is seeking an individual who will partner with operations leadership in the implementation of Stantec’s Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) program to support the 2,750 employees of the Environmental Services Business Operating Unit (BOU) in the United States (US). The HSSE team is looking for an inspiring, motivated individual who can champion our HSSE program and provide fit-for-purpose solutions for our Environmental Services BOU and its clients.
This is a full-time position that will report to an HSSE Director of Operations. Work hours will reflect the requirements of the geography. The opportunity will be based out of one of our larger offices in the US.
Your Key Competencies
- Act as a highly regarded leader, thought partner and a source of counsel and advice on HSSE for the ES BOU in the US.
- Partner with change leaders and managers in planning, implementing, and evaluating actions.

- Assist in the development of strategic plans to advance our HSSE program.
- Collaborate in the development of creative ideas and solutions based on a range of perspectives and use each team member’s expertise and work style to build consensus.
- Make decisions by weighing guidelines, procedures, and other factors. Involve the right people in the decision-making process when applicable and seek to gain an in-depth understanding of information and issues.

Key Functions
- Lead your team in support of Environmental Services BOU employees and leadership.
- Partner with other North American HSSE Managers to align tactics across HSSE activities.
- Be a trusted advisor who supports and guides BOU leadership with respect to HSSE.
- Identify and share best practices within the organization.
- Develop and deliver HSSE-related training in alignment with the broader HSSE program.
- Create and deliver engaging multi-channeled communications related to HSSE matters.
- Support leadership in the promotion of culture growth with respect to HSSE.
- Analyze data to support the BOU leadership’s decision making.
- Provide technical support related to HSSE.
- Support the BOU to meet client needs and expectations.
- Manage incidents with the BOU and HSSE leadership.
- Support Stantec’s subcontractor management program and support contractor prequalification assessments as per Stantec’s procedures when requested.
- Guide project teams in the development of project specific safety plans and emergency response plans.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
- Professional safety certification, e.g., CSP or CIH.
- Experience in HSSE related to environmental consulting or construction is preferred but not required.
- Experience as a safety culture change agent.
- Field HSSE training/certifications relevant to environmental consulting or engineering (e.g., HAZWOPER, Confined Space Entry).
- Working knowledge of HSSE regulations in the United States.
- Capable of preparing and presenting to small and large groups (virtually or in person).
- Capable of preparing and presenting to senior leadership.
- Experience managing and working with a remote team.
- A valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record is required.
- Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office tools.
- Requires up to 10% travel, typically one week or less in duration.
- The ability to safely navigate stairs, ladders, and uneven terrain, enter active construction sites, enter structures under construction, and wear specialized personal protective equipment (PPE) is required.
Education and Experience
- A minimum of 10 years’ experience in a health and safety profession.
- Degree or Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety or a related field preferred.
