The opportunity

Stantec’s Buildings team in New Zealand delivers end-to-end projects for our clients, from feasibility and design through to construction, commissioning, and operation. Specialising in mission-critical facilities such as data centres and healthcare, our team of around 100 people brings together expertise across mechanical, hydraulic, fire, electrical, structural, and sustainability engineering. We’re proud to put people and user needs at the centre of every design.

We are looking for a Hydraulic Engineer to join our supportive Buildings team. This opportunity would suit a qualified engineer who is keen to continue developing their career while working across a diverse range of projects. You’ll bring solid hydraulic design experience within the building services sector and enjoy collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to deliver quality outcomes for clients and communities.

In this role, you’ll have the opportunity to further develop your technical capability, client relationship skills, and project coordination experience while contributing to meaningful projects across a variety of sectors.

You’ll draw on your practical and commercial understanding of hydraulic engineering to support project delivery, working closely with senior engineers and wider project teams who are committed to sharing knowledge and helping you grow.

Our work spans a wide variety of project types, including retail, office, laboratories, residential, health and aged care, data centres, industrial, education, and infrastructure. You’ll join a collaborative team environment where you can contribute to multiple projects, build strong relationships, and bring a positive, solutions-focused approach to your work.

Day-to-day tasks would involve:

• Undertaking hydraulic engineering assessments and calculations for the design of building systems.

• Working with a range of clients and stakeholders, including local authorities, government bodies, and commercial organisations.

• Applying strong organisational and time management skills alongside your technical design capability.

• Managing workloads to ensure client needs are met while maintaining strong working relationships with colleagues locally and across the wider Stantec team.

• Building and developing your professional profile internally and externally through successful project delivery.

• Maintaining a high level of service and responsiveness for clients.

• Assisting with project coordination and supporting business development activities.

• Supporting senior engineers and wider project teams to deliver projects on programme, within budget, and to a high technical standard.

• Adhering to professional standards, ethics, and quality procedures.

• Contributing positively to our team culture and supporting a collaborative working environment.

To be successful for this role you’ll need:

• A Mechanical Engineering degree or equivalent qualification.

• Knowledge of the New Zealand Building Code and relevant Australian and New Zealand Standards.

• Around 3+ years’ professional experience within the consulting or engineering industry.

• Previous hydraulic building services experience, including domestic hot and cold water, sanitary, and stormwater drainage systems.

• Strong technical understanding of the design and construction associated with hydraulic engineering works.

• The ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively.

• Strong communication and relationship-building skills.

• Initiative, curiosity, and a willingness to contribute ideas.

• A positive, can-do attitude and a collaborative approach.

• Working toward Chartered Professional Engineer status would be favourable but is not essential.
