Stantec’s Water sector, which brings together many of the world’s top engineers, planners, scientists, and others, sees water a bit differently—as a single holistic system rather than as unconnected networks divided by jurisdictional boundaries. We use this perspective to help communities tap into water’s potential. Throughout the life cycle of capture, use, reuse, discharge, and delivery, our team optimizes every facet of a water system. Whether a project calls for planners, managers, economists, financial analysts, designers, construction managers, or facility operators, we have the right experts to provide creative, yet practical, water solutions.

Your Opportunity

Stantec’s Walnut Creek, California, office is seeking a full-time Integrated Water Management Intern to join our multi-disciplinary team of water resources professionals, each committed to delivering sound and strategic consulting services to a range of local, regional, state, and federal clients. The selected intern will support a variety of integrated water resources planning analysis and communication efforts in California, directly impacting safe drinking water, stormwater management, green infrastructure, financial and environmental sustainability, and environmental injustices. If working on challenging projects and working on teams aimed at delivering solutions to some of California’s most complex water challenges appeal to you, join us.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Gain and apply experience in California water resources including provision of safe drinking water, integrated water resources management, applicable laws/policies/regulations, and water governance and community engagement.
  • Conduct research and assessments to support water supply, sanitation, flood, or stormwater management efforts at local and watershed scales.
  • Contribute to evaluations and assessments in support of struggling and failing drinking water systems across California through the Safe and Affordable Funding for Equity and Resilience (SAFER) program.
  • Support County-level drought resilience planning through the California Department of Water Resources’ (DWR) Direct Technical Assistance (DTA) Program.
  • Perform project administration tasks including preparing reports and memos, gathering information, design, writing proposals, drafting correspondence, and completing progress reports.
  • Work in-person from the Pasadena office at least two consecutive days per week.
  • Travel within California as needed for project work, not to exceed 10%.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for working on multi-disciplinary teams of project managers, project engineers and staff, clients, regulatory agencies, and subcontractors.
  • Must have a good driving record and valid driver’s license.

Education and Experience

  • In progress toward a master’s degree (minimum) in environmental management or analysis, sustainability or resilience studies, public policy (environmental or natural resources focus), or environmental economics, or similar; with a minimum of 1 year of related undergraduate coursework or work experience.
  • Cover Letter
  • Specific coursework or exposure to one or more of the following:
    • Quantitative and/or qualitative environmental analysis
    • Development of criteria to evaluate ecosystem performance or health.
    • Public policy related to sustainability, natural resources, or climate adaptation.
    • Economic and political context of water provision in California.

This description is not a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities that may be required of the employee and other duties, responsibilities and activities may be assigned or may be changed at any time with or without notice.
