Your Opportunity

Stantec is seeking an Environmental Planner to support our urban ecology team. This role is a unique opportunity to make a tangible impact on the communities that we live in. Our team works closely with municipal governments and local land developers to support sustainable development that includes prioritization and retention of key natural features while still allowing for development to occur to support affordable housing and economic growth.

This role allows you to work though a project for the whole lifecycle. Projects in the initial planning phase will see us conduct biophysical surveys and identify key natural features. At the design phase we get to provide input on design elements that will support and enhance biodiversity. In the construction phase we support construction monitoring activities and implementation of the mitigations we established during design. Finally, at the post-construction phase we support long term management planning and restoration activities. You also have the benefit of being able to look at your community with pride knowing that you had a hand in developing the area.

 Your Key Responsibilities

  • Promote a positive Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) culture in the team and across the organization.
  • Assess habitat condition within natural environment and conduct or coordinate field surveys. Collect, maintain, and analyze ecological data.
  • Plan and implement ecological restoration projects and park management plans.
  • Coordinate with engineering disciplines and other biological disciplines to prepare deliverables.
  • Work directly with clients to provide strategic environmental advice. Act as Subject Matter Expert (SME) for ecological issues, environmental compliance
  • Coordinate and track assignments, scopes, schedules, budgets and deliverables
  • Work jointly with clients and local municipalities to communicate findings and develop appropriate mitigation measures.
  • Support and encourage technical training.
  • Facilitate collaboration with team members to meet schedules.
  • Lead or support business development activities, including proposals (budget development and proposal writing) and relationship building with existing and prospective clients.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Ability to acquire, review and analyze biophysical data to develop or support the development of recommendations to provide to internal project teams and/or clients.
  • Ability to act as field lead for wetland assessments and/or wildlife surveys.
  • Experience in natural area surveys and conservation and restoration planning. Ecological health modeling, and advanced GIS skills are assets.
  • Knowledge of local natural history, ecosystems, biodiversity and habitat-forming processes, as well as City policies will be considered assets.
  • Understanding and applied knowledge working under provincial and federal legislation (e.g., Water Act, Public Lands Act, Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, Fisheries Act, Canadian Navigable Waters Act and Municipal Government Act.
  • Current membership with the Alberta Society of Professional Biologists (ASPB), or other professional designations (either as in training or full member).
  • Understanding of municipal political environment
  • Possess strong conflict resolution and communication skills.
  • Project management skills an asset
  • Ability to work both independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Strong technical writing skills

Education and Experience

  • Degree or diploma in a discipline related to Environmental Sciences.
  • Field identification skills for wetland assessments and/or wildlife identification skills. Other biophysical field skills considered an asset.
  • Proficient with Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience
