- General understanding of concepts of relevant areas of civil engineering design, including gravity and pressure systems, geotechnical, survey, storm water/drainage design, road design, erosion and sediment control, and grading.
- General understanding of all phases of engineering document production and the relationship between drawings and specifications.
- Ability to recognize when technical problems are developing and initiate appropriate corrective actions using sound professional judgment, creativity and innovation.
- Develop a working knowledge of codes, legal and design requirements in relevant jurisdictions and jurisdictional experience and contacts.
- Ability to approach tasks using sound professional judgment, creativity and innovation.
- Ability to participate and collaborate in a project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought.
- Ability to interpret sketches, drawings and other similar material.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, as well as relevant discipline software programs.
- Knowledge and skill with AutoCAD, Civil3D, PCSWMM, StormCAD, WaterCAD, or other modeling software is considered an asset.
- Knowledge and skill with the use of survey equipment (GPS and/or total station) is considered an asset.
- Taking initiative on tasks in coordination with other members of the design team.
- Develop the ability to effectively discuss project issues with clients and reviewing agencies.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to work efficiently and effectively within a team.
- Background in the land development industry is considered and asset.
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills (both verbal and written) are essential.
- Experience using survey equipment, including Total Station and GPS would be considered an asset.
Education and Experience
- Degree in Civil Engineering from a recognized university program.
- Registered or eligibility to be registered as an Engineer-in-Training.
- Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle for transportation to construction sites.
