Join us and design your place with Stantec.
The AEC industry is evolving at a rapid pace, leveraging new technology and innovation. Stantec invests tremendous efforts in advancing our practice through computational design and leveraging data to drive efficiency and accuracy through automation and data informed decision making.
Your Opportunity
This is a hybrid co-op role with a focus on architectural engineering applications with computational design interest. You will work with close guidance and supervision on tasks and smaller projects, and as a team member of a larger project under the guidance of a Senior Engineer/Designer. In addition, you will split your time to work on design computation tasks under the guidance of a Computational Design Lead for engineering. You will perform a variety of tasks which may include Revit design, calculations, and fieldwork. You will be assisting with innovative and creative digital solutions developing Dynamo and Grasshopper scripts for use on projects where applicable. This is a terrific opportunity for a college student to support a number of exciting local projects and learn applications of computational design in the AEC industry.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Production of Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) drawings, primarily in Revit.
- Perform field work (evaluation of existing sites) as directed by senior engineer/designer.
- Participation in mechanical engineering design including building load calculations, ductwork, piping, and equipment layouts.
- Assists with engineering duties on projects of various complexity.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the senior engineering staff.
- Collaborate with computational designer/lead to assess office needs and develop workflows in Dynamo or Grasshopper focusing on the automation of design and documentation tasks.
- Research new computational design applications or tools in the industry and assist in the incubation of ideas for development.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
- Proficient in CADD with basic understanding of Revit, AutoCAD, and/or Rhino, and the use of it as a drafting/design tool.
- Ability to participate and collaborate in a project team setting.
- Ability to take direction, follow process and accept feedback and suggestions from senior engineers/designers.
- Competency in parametric design methodologies using Dynamo and Grasshopper
- Knowledge of programming in Python and C# is not required but preferred. Knowledge and know-how of Machine Learning toolboxes (Pytorch, Keras, SciPy, Tensorflow) and general interest in multi-variate optimization problems.
- Ability to research new technologies and algorithms to enhance engineering workflows. Self-starter, natural problem-solving appetite to find opportunities for computational tool development.
Education and Experience
- Working toward a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Architectural Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.
Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include using a ladder, working with measuring tools, and exposure to the elements while working outside.
