As a professional services firm we are seeking a Mechanical Designer to work with general supervision and direction by our senior mechanical engineer staff, with the potential for growth. You will participate in the evaluation, recommendation, and specification for engineered systems or products for a project verifying compliance with applicable codes and engineering standards / practices. Stantec’s diverse project portfolio encompasses multiple sectors including but not limited to; Commercial, Hospitality, Multi-Family Highrise, K-12/Higher Education, Transportation, Federal, Industrial, Science and Technology, and Infrastructure. Your Key Responsibilities
Your role as a Mechanical Designer on our team is to work independently in the design of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems for assigned projects, through all phases of the project lifecycle.
- Able to work independently on multiple projects, with supervision varying with project complexity, teaming with design colleagues to conceptualize and develop full documentation for new construction and renovation projects for multiple types of facilities such as industrial warehouse, manufacturing, commercial office, healthcare, higher education, and/or research laboratory.
- Participate in client meetings on projects to establish design criteria, review design progress as well as supporting through construction administration.
- With assistance of senior staff on complex projects, evaluate, select, specify, and engineer all mechanical engineered systems or products for a project.
- Engage in the development of a design through sketches, electronic models, diagrams, and other visual formats.
- Utilize BIM technologies in development of three-dimensional models of building’s mechanical systems.
- Prepare and revise documentation in various mechanical phases including site plans, floor plans, diagrams, and details.
- Participate in coordination meetings with internal team members and/or external consultants, owner, general contractor, sub-contractors, and vendors.
- Support the preparation and coordination of the project specifications with construction documents.
- When appropriate, delegate basic design-level tasks to BIM technicians and junior staff.
- Assist in the development of new standards and specifications for the mechanical group.
- Conduct field surveys of existing conditions for buildings, prepare field reports, and compile punch lists at project closeout.
- Evaluate designs to ensure that they meet all federal, state, and local codes, and any applicable client design standards.

- Requisite knowledge, interpretation, and application of the mechanical and/or plumbing codes, energy codes, ASHRAE standards, and other building codes.
- Strong understanding of all phases of project document production and the relationship between drawings and specifications.
- Requisite knowledge of mechanical systems means and methods, materials, concepts, and industry standards. Ability to communicate ideas to others.
- Participate and collaborate in project team setting and engage in creative and critical thought.
- Development of project job specific discipline specifications independently from a company master specification.
- Demonstrates creativity, foresight, and mature engineering judgment in anticipating and solving problems.
- Ability to problem-solve and communicate ideas to others.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, and ability to write clear, thorough technical reports.
- Demonstrated ability to handle multiple ongoing projects.
- Ability to perform in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
- Knowledge of and ability to use standard computer applications including, but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite, Bluebeam, Autodesk AutoCAD, Autodesk Revit.
- Knowledge of and ability to use software for heating/cooling load calculations, either Trane Trace, Carrier HAP, IES, or equivalent.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution.
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant working experience in designing Mechanical/HVAC systems.
- EIT working toward licensure required.
- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) is a plus.
