Your Opportunity
Stantec is seeking an exceptionally talented and enthusiastic individual with a keen interest in the natural sciences to join our team in Kansas City, KS as a Permitted Bat Biologist. In this position, you will utilize your knowledge and experience to perform bat surveys and analysis to support environmental services projects. This position will include opportunities for both field and office work in the Great Plains Region (Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Oklahoma) and potentially elsewhere in the United States.
Our team members can be involved in a variety of projects that may include endangered species assessments, environmental impact assessment, habitat restoration, wetland characterizations, and water resources management.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Analyzing and summarizing data from bat mist-netting surveys and habitat assessments for a variety of species and incorporating that information into larger documents.
- Assisting with field work and collection of field data as needed.
- Prepare, research, review, and edit technical documents such as bat survey reports, habitat conservation plans, and environmental and technical reports.
- Lead mist-netting surveys for listed bat surveys.
- Conduct vegetation inventories as it pertains to bat survey site description.
- Complete aquatic assessment as they pertain to bat survey site description.
- Perform background data reviews.
- Submit environmental permit applications.
- Review endangered resource records.
- Support GPS data collection and mapping.
- Use ArcGIS online mapping and data collection applications.
- Record, enter, organize, manage, and analyze data.
- Assist with and prepare portions of written reports, tables, spreadsheets, databases, and maps for client and regulatory agency review.
- Travel up to 50% of the time.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
- USFWS Collecting Permit for Listed bats is required.
- Interest in ecosystems, natural resource conservation, and the outdoors is essential.
- Ability to solve problems using critical thinking and to complete tasks with consideration for their own and the team’s safety.
- Understanding of policies and procedures for HSSE, including client-specific training (as required).
- Working knowledge of field sampling techniques.
- Willingness to learn new skills while conducting field work.
- Conscientious, organized, and disciplined.
- Builds and maintains productive professional and personal networking relationships within their technical team and Business Center.
- Good driving record and a valid driver’s license.
- Willingness to travel and conduct field work in potentially remote areas for extended periods including overnight travel.
- Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
- Technical writing skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including exceptional MS Office skills.
- Detailed note-taking skills.
- A positive attitude in all working conditions.
Education and Experience
Required:
- Bachelor’s Degree in an environmental discipline (biology, natural resources, soil science, or related field).
- 5 years of related experience.
- Demonstrated experience with biological surveys in the region.
- Experience with bat radio telemetry and roost emergence.
- Comfortable with ArcGIS field maps and GPS-based survey equipment.
- Work well in both teams and independently.
Preferred:
- Master’s degree in biology or related field from an accredited institution.
- Knowledge, understanding, and use of statistical analysis.
The typical office environment is working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
