The role:

Due to continued growth in our Environment business, we are looking for a Taxonomist/Flora Specialist to work in our passionate Flora & Vegetation Team. You will collaborate with a close-knit team who are experts in the field of botany, with demonstrated experience in undertaking comprehensive detailed flora and vegetation surveys, targeted significant species surveys, technical reporting, and impact assessments.

Based in our very own herbarium located at our Perth office, you will be responsible for undertaking plant identifications collected by our staff across most bioregions of Western Australia. Additionally, as part of this role, you will manage and maintain the in-house herbarium and contribute to the professional growth of our team of botanists through mentoring and knowledge sharing. We have an exciting pipeline of current and upcoming projects and you will be well-supported by our management team.

Day-to-day tasks would involve:

  • Identifying plant specimens collected during Detailed, Targeted and Monitoring surveys, from a diverse range of bioregions, mainly within the arid zone.
  • Preserving and cataloging samples, ensuring proper storage and documentation for future reference or verification.
  • Maintain taxonomic accuracy through scientific literature, workshops, collaboration with museums and universities and staying current with classification changes.
  • Liaise with technical and subject matter experts.
  • Mentor graduate and intermediate botanists in the field of taxonomy.
  • Provide technical support and advice to the broader Environmental Services Business.

To be successful in the role you will need:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Environmental Science, within Botany, Biology, Ecology or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of three years’ professional experience in undertaking species identification, ideally focused on the WA flora.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including advanced technical reporting skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and demonstrated research abilities.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment and embrace collaboration.
