The Practice Leader – Hydrodynamic Modelling provides strategic, technical and people leadership across the Practice, playing a critical role in driving business growth and delivering high‑quality, consistent outcomes for our clients. This role is central to shaping technical excellence, building capability, and strengthening our market position.

As a key leader within Water Resources Australia, the Practice Leader oversees the Hydrodynamic Modelling knowledge community, driving continuous improvement and ensuring consistent processes, quality assurance, and best‑practice approaches are adopted across the business. Through this leadership, the role enables efficient delivery across projects of all scales and reinforces Stantec’s position as a Tier 1 industry leader in flood and stormwater modelling.

The Practice Leader collaborates closely with Practice Leaders across Australia and New Zealand, as well as the Technical Delivery Leader – Water, to share knowledge, align ways of working, and promote consistency—supporting a unified and collaborative ANZ business.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Identifying and developing strategic business opportunities and supporting major strategic pursuits.

  • Leading technical excellence through high‑quality project delivery, with a strong focus on automation and digital tools to improve efficiency.

  • Ensuring consistency in technical delivery and the effective adoption of tools across the market.

  • Identifying, mentoring and supporting technical leaders within the Practice.

  • Leading and overseeing the Practice Knowledge Community to build capability and share best practice.

  • Collaborating with Business Centre leaders to deliver high‑quality, consistent outcomes for clients.

Alongside hands‑on technical delivery, review and mentorship in water resources projects, the Practice Leader will:

  • Position Stantec as a high‑quality, competitively priced hydrologic and hydraulic modelling consultancy through digital innovation.

  • Partner with Stantec’s digital innovation teams to enhance and implement automated tools that improve productivity and reduce risk.

  • Support innovative technical approaches for strategic bids and pursuits.

  • Lead by example to uplift digital capability and tool adoption across the national team.

  • Facilitate regular internal forums to promote knowledge sharing, technical discussions and continuous improvement.

Specifically, your duties will include:

Reporting to the Market Leader – Water Resources, Australia (ML), the Practice Leader (PL) is responsible for:

·       Supporting strategic business opportunities to shape the BC.

·       Supporting the Market Leader in strategic pursuits.

·    Technical excellence of the Practice they represent through project delivery – with an emphasis on tool development (automation) to improve project efficiency.

·       Ensuring technical delivery consistency and uptake of effective tools within their market.

·       Identifying technical leaders within the BC who operate within their Practice.

·       Overseeing their practice Knowledge Community.

·       Supporting various leadership roles within the BC to deliver technical excellence for our clients.

To be successful for this role you'll present:

·       Relevant tertiary qualification, preferably post-graduate specific to water resources and computer science.

·   Nominally a minimum of 15 years of related work, technical leadership, and consulting experience; or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.

·       Professional registration in a related field.

·       Comprehensive knowledge in a range of flood and stormwater modelling software.

·       Programming and data analysis skills applicable to water resources projects.
