      About the role

We’re seeking a Principal Structural Engineer to lead our Structural team in Wellington. This is a rare opportunity to shape the future of transport infrastructure locally, as well as working on high-impact projects across New Zealand.

You’ll lead a growing team of structural engineers, drive technical excellence, and foster strong client relationships with key stakeholders such as Waka Kotahi (NZTA), KiwiRail, and local councils. You’ll also collaborate across disciplines and regions to deliver innovative solutions and grow our business alongside technical and operational leaders. Key aspects of the role include:

Leadership & Team Development

·         Lead and mentor a team of structural engineers across various experience levels.

·         Foster a collaborative, success-oriented team culture.

·         Support staff development through coaching, training, and performance reviews.

·         Ensure appropriate staffing levels and support regional resource sharing.

·         Work closely with the Wellington Transport Leader to monitor team performance and contribute to regional strategic planning.

·         Collaborate with other Team Leads across New Zealand to share knowledge and resources.

Project Delivery & Technical Excellence

·         Act as Project Manager or Technical Lead or other substantive technical role on complex transport infrastructure projects.

·         Oversee the full lifecycle of projects from opportunity identification to client engagement through to design and delivery of transport-related structures.

·         Ensure quality, safety, and compliance with industry standards and client expectations.

Business Development & Client Engagement

·         Initiate, build and maintain strong relationships with key clients.

·         Identify and pursue new business opportunities to contribute to revenue forecast targets.

·         Support the development of Account Management Plans and strategic growth initiatives.

To be successful for this role you'll need:

After tertiary education, you’ll have at least 10 years’ relevant experience, be a member of Engineering New Zealand and be a Chartered Professional Engineer. As well as your technical ability, you’ll have proven skills and experience in developing and maintaining strong client relationships, leading both junior and senior engineers in your team with confidence and proven capability in generating positive commercial outcomes in the consulting industry, in particular with NZTA, KiwiRail and Local Government.
