Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Proven technical, communication, writing and organization skills
  • Familiarity with freshwater ecology and knowledge of current provincial and federal government regulatory requirement
  • Required experience in:
    • Working in a collaborative team environment
    • Developing field programs and methods to meet specific project objectives
    • Preparing Fisheries Act authorization applications with offsetting plans
    • Preparing environmental/impact assessment technical chapters federally and provincially, preferably in British Columbia
    • Leading field crews in the execution of field programs including developing health and safety protocols and developing custom field methods when required
    • Collecting, managing, and analyzing data (statistical experience is preferred)
    • Leading the preparation of complex, high-consequence technical reports, possibly multi-disciplinary
    • Leading and contributing to proposals of varying sizes
    • Business development through client relationships and/or technical expertise
    • Leading junior and intermediate staff in data management and report preparation
  • Experience in any of the following is an asset:
    • Developing habitat offset and restoration plans
    • Assessing fish distribution, abundance, and health using desktop, field, and laboratory data
    • Construction monitoring and environmental management planning, including fish salvage, underwater noise, and erosion and sediment control
    • Developing field study protocols for and deploying remote operated vehicles or drones
    • Working closely with hydrologists and hydraulic modellers

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology is required and a M.Sc. or PhD in Biology is preferred.
  • Current Registered Professional Biologist accreditation with the College of Applied Biology is required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience as an aquatic biologist, 15 or more years preferred, with experience in freshwater ecosystems in British Columbia.
  • Consulting experience is required.

Other types of safety training are assets: Intermediate First Aid and Transportation Endorsement certificate, UTV training, Electrofishing Crew Lead certificate.

Stantec British Columbia's standard work week is 37.5 hours. This position is eligible for overtime in the office and field for hours worked in accordance with British Columbia's labour laws. Our typical office environment involves working with computers and remaining relatively sedentary. Stantec offers a flexible work arrangement for desk-based tasks including working from Stantec office locations, working from home, or a mix depending on the situation. Field work may include exposure to inclement weather, and travel through rough and remote terrain, while carrying equipment.
