Your Opportunity

Stantec Water is currently looking to add a Lead Electrical Engineer located in our growing Las Vegas, Nevada office. This consulting engineering role will serve as senior technical leadership on projects and within our regional and national electrical practice. It will require application of technical skills, project delivery, and leadership to a complex array of multi-disciplinary planning, design and construction projects for municipal water and wastewater systems including conveyance and treatment facilities planning and design, and related infrastructure.  The selected candidate will need to be self-directed, capable of leading and supervising teams, eager to mentor staff, and should demonstrate an enthusiasm to help develop our electrical engineering team.


This position applies specific knowledge in the areas of: design of unit substations, main power distribution, and motor control centers (including layout, transformer sizing, automatic transfer switch sizing, bus sizing, breaker sizing and single line diagram preparation); design of control systems including ladder diagrams; sizing conductors and raceway systems; facility layout of conductors and raceways; design and layout of duct banks and manhole systems; design and layout of lighting and receptacle systems including panelboard schedules and reflected ceiling plans; and preparation of point to point wiring diagrams.   


Your Key Responsibilities

  • Working knowledge of various water and wastewater treatment processes such as: pumping systems, screening systems, blower/aeration systems, mixing/agitation systems, chemical storage and feed systems, conveyance systems, and other water/wastewater processes. 
  • Supporting local, national and global multi-disciplinary teams on electrical engineering projects. 
  • Mentoring junior staff. 
  • Performing power system design and studies including preparation of short circuit, protective relaying coordination and arc flash studies utilizing SKM and/or ETAP software. 
  • Contribute to conceptual report writing and preparation of construction plans and technical specifications. 
  • Developing ladder logic diagrams and control schematics for various full- and variable-speed motor starting methods. 
  • Performing calculations for voltage drop, electrical load studies and standby generator sizing and related design. 
  • Technical services also will likely include electrical power systems for generation and distribution, cabling (cable trays and conduits) and wiring, motor control centers, drives, communications systems, grounding, lightning protection, etc. 
  • Experience in the application of classified/hazardous areas will be required. 
  • Assisting in project administration including writing technical reports, gathering information, drafting proposals, drafting correspondence, estimating and tracking project costs and completing progress reports. 
  • Reviewing Contractor shop drawing submittals for electrical and electrical-related equipment 
  • Investigating and developing engineered solutions to Contractor’s Requests for Information 

Participating in field activities including site inspections, shop inspections, equipment commissioning and start-up, equipment performance testing monitoring and similar related field work. 

Your Capabilities and Credentials
  • Must have experience with electrical equipment such as generators, transformers, switchgear (low and medium voltage up to 15 kV); knowledge in solid state protective relaying and metering is a plus. 
  • Must be able to demonstrate good interpersonal abilities for working in a team environment as well as working with and/or supervising disparately located technical teams. 
  • Must have excellent communication skills and the ability to convey project electrical needs to the project managers and clients and to formulate those needs into comprehensive plans and specifications. 
  • Must have the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously. 
  • Willing and able to travel. Occasional international travel may be required. 
  • Ability to work in and/or coordinate design development in a 3D / 4D database driven environment will be considered a plus.  
  • Strong oral and written communication skills. 
  • Ability to prepare complete, concise and organized engineering calculations and analyses, and to mentor junior staff in accomplishing the same. 
  • Electrical construction field experience. 
  • Direct experience with (or direct management of teams using) one or more of the following applications will be considered a plus: Bentley AutoPlant, AutoDesk AutoCad, AutoDesk AutoCad 3D or AutoDesk Revit MEP. 
  • Extensive knowledge of the NEC and other NFPA standards is required.

Education and Experience

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering required. 
  • Licensed Nevada Professional Engineer (PE), or ability to obtain Nevada PE by comity within 6 months is required. 
  • Ability to obtain licensure in other Desert-Mountain states within 1 year of employment, as directed.
  • Minimum 8 years’ experience required in water and/or wastewater treatment facility-related projects.
  • Proficiency with Office software including Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Demonstrates strong written and verbal communication including public speaking experience, and leading client meetings.
  • Strong interpersonal abilities for working in diverse team environments with staff, clients, and stakeholders.
