Senior Urban Designer – National locations

About the role

Are you a motivated and progressive urban designer who is looking for an opportunity to lead and grow an Urban Design team?  Here’s your opportunity to do precisely that as we are searching for an energetic and driven person to join our Stantec New Zealand team.

As part of the role, you will develop and deliver an integrated Urban and Landscape strategy (in association with the landscape team), lead designs, visualisation and documentation for a wide range of urban places, community development, 3 waters and multi-modal transport projects.  This will require you to advise and collaborate with inter-disciplinary teams including planning, landscape architects, stakeholder engagement, Māori Cultural advisory and many more. 

You will be comfortable identifying opportunities as you will have well established client and industry relationships as week as being involved with the marketing of urban design and strategic planning services within Stantec

Day-to-day tasks would involve:

  • Utilise your established networks and client relationships to develop and broaden Stantec's capabilities in urban design.

  • Utilise your existing networks and client relationships to sustainably develop Stantec’s Urban Design business.

  • Using strategic thinking and a collaborative approach to contribute to the development of urban regeneration strategies, masterplans, consenting, public space planning and design, and redevelopment projects.

  • Lead the preparation and present written and illustrative outputs to communicate plans and designs internally and externally to clients and project stakeholders.

  • Lead, with the support of our technical teams across landscape architecture and digital technologies, the preparation of high-quality presentation graphic material including plans, sketches, diagrams, 3D models and documents.

  •  Promote Stantec’s expertise and capabilities including publishing and presenting of quality technical work.

  •  Develop and grow Stantec's capability in the field of urban design.

To be successful for this role you'll need:

  • Above all, be motivated to have a positive influence on the way our built environment is conceived, planned and designed to support the well-being of people and the communities they live in.

  • Be a motivated leader who is up for the challenge of growing Stantec’s Urban Design team to provide wider service offerings in the market.

  • A professional qualification with a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in urban design, Landscape Architecture, Urban Planning or other relevant qualification. A post-graduate qualification in Urban Design is preferred.

  • Minimum 12 years’ relevant experience in consulting, government or industry with specialist skills in urban design.

  • Experience working across all stages of a project including feasibility, conceptual design, design development and documentation.                            Familiarity with the New Zealand planning processes and awareness of the proposed policy changes.

  •  Experience with Adobe Creative Suite and 3D modelling skills.

  •  Be a Registered member of the Urban Designers Institute Aotearoa, and/or the New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects Tuia Pito Ora, and/or New Zealand Planning Institute, or with an interest in working towards professional registration.
