Your Opportunity

Stantec is hiring a Senior Distribution Designer to join our US Mountain region Transmission & Distribution (T&D) group. Your Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and perform site visit for field data collection and verification of existing distribution lines, facilities and project requirements. 
  • Prepare cost estimates on engineering and fielding efforts.
  • Assist with preparing proposals by decomposing scopes of work into individual tasks, obtaining estimates from internal and external service providers, and other proposal-related tasks
  • Liaise with clients and external stakeholders as part of executing various projects
  • Perform detailed design and engineering calculations of overhead electric distribution systems to comply with the client’s standards, specifications, preferences, and relevant industry standards (NESC, GO95, etc.).
  • Assist with training junior personnel in distribution design principles and act as a mentor when needed
  • Review work of other designers for conformance to client specifications
  • Support the day to day activities of the project from inception through. engineering, construction, commissioning and hand over.
  • Function as project engineer on assigned projects.
  • Report the progress of the project to the senior engineer, project manager, and/or client
  • Think outside the box and use your knowledge to develop solutions where no existing standard or off-the-shelf choice exists

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Detailed, first-hand knowledge of design, construction, O&M of overhead and underground distribution lines at or below 34.5 kV
  • Experience with CAD systems such as Bentley MicroStation or Autodesk AutoCAD/Civil3D is desirable
  • General knowledge of other electrical grid-related disciplines (transmission, substations, generation) is a plus
  • Experience with both overhead and underground systems
  • Experience with medium-voltage systems in both utility and industrial contexts is desirable
  • Some knowledge of project management principles (e.g. budget, burn rate, gross margin) is desireable
  • PLS-CADD, PLS-Pole and OCalc experience is desirable.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook and Office is required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Prioritize and manage multiple tasks / projects with various due dates.
  • Travel and hand-on site work should be expected, up to 20% of your time. 

Education and Experience

  • At least 8 years of direct electric utility or utility/power consulting experience; other infrastructure-related experience will be considered
  • Completion of a related STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) credential is a plus

While work is primarily conducted remotely, employees must be able to occasionally travel to the noted office locations for in-person engagements. 

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
