Purpose of Job 
 

The Technical Director inspires and upholds the highest ambitions for our Building’s Business Line – to be the world’s leading integrated design firm.

 

The Technical Director must take the lead in driving a common vision for technical quality, engineering excellence and a culture of community, nationally, across our Buildings Business Line. The candidate will provide direct technical leadership, nationally, to the Hydraulics/Fire Protection Discipline in coordination with these efforts.

 

The Technical Director role is intended to champion and deliver technical quality reviews, technical knowledge sharing and technical training within their respective discipline across the entire Buildings business line. The core requirement is to provide technical leadership and quality assurance across a broad range of projects in the Buildings Business Line within their respective discipline, and provide guidance and experience on interdisciplinary coordination requirements and checks.

 

The Technical Director is seen as a highly experienced expert in their discipline, undertaking special, complex and advanced projects and actively contributing to innovation efforts, addressing client/market needs and seeking to influence projects to ensure successful projects and satisfied clients.

 

Client satisfaction is attained through superior performance, attention to quality and operational detail, engagement, and personal ownership. Developing standards/guidelines/policies necessary to carry out project design and review will also be required. Ensuring all engineering activities and projects within the organization, are aligned with the established policies and objectives of the organization is essential.

 

The Technical Director will be expected to routinely interact with clients, industry professionals, government officials, authorities, contractors, and others and to represent Stantec and provide guidance and training to less experienced staff. It would be expected that the Technical Director will actively participate in local/national professional organizations and associated activities and may present as an expert at conferences.

 

Essential Functions  (Primary Focus)
•    Technical review of projects as independent reviewer; and establish, lead and chair a national panel with staff from each BC (aim for one face to face panel meeting per year).
•    Personally taking the Technical Independent Review (TIR) role on the projects in the business line with the highest levels of risk, value and complexity.
•    The primary focus of the role must be technical engagement of projects through the process of early involvement and TIR. This role is to be highly utilised across a broad range of projects. 
•    Drive a culture of innovation and incorporate industry trends in engineering, including sustainability, high performance building design, and energy strategies. 
•    Assist in the undertaking of Go-No Go assessments for our most complex and challenging pursuits.

 

Secondary Functions
•    Modify established technical guidelines, standards, QA practices and policies and initiate new approaches, thought leadership and research and development.
•    Assist in pursuing and being involved in significant projects that positively transform our communities and inspire and challenge us as engineers.
•    Troubleshoot for Technical Leads in the discipline as necessary
•    Liaise with Group and Technical leaders within each BC to identify technical training requirements within their respective Business Line, based on localized skill gaps
•    Create and review technical proposal content including value propositions, methodologies, risk reviews and interview materials. 
•    Drive technical knowledge sharing across the business line and internationally.
•    Promote and execute post-project reviews in support of continuous improvement of internal technical processes and procedures.
•    Engage in and support career development of a technical nature, which will include coaching and mentoring across the discipline.
•    Assist with the collection and maintenance of technical skills matrix/inventory
•    Serve as the national leader for driving discipline-specific priorities to be coordinated through the ADL initiative.
•    Create an annual roadmap for the initiatives that fall under the under the ADL remit, and to work with the ADL on prioritization according to budgetary constraints.
•    Act as the primary conduit for communication between the ADL and discipline.

 

Industry Leadership
•    Engage as a leader in the technical design community through participation in and/or leadership of technical organisations, boards, and technical committees.
•    Encourage and coordinate representation from across the BL in professional organisations and industry leadership.
•    Take a proactive role in furthering our presence and leading staff to participate in Professional Symposiums/ Publications/Webinars as well as partner with marketing and public relations for published articles and white papers to demonstrate excellence and thought leadership in targeted areas.

 

Experience
•    The Technical Director will have at least 20 years (preferably a minimum of 20 years) of relevant experience of working within a multi-disciplinary engineering practice within their discipline of expertise. 

Education
•    Tertiary qualification in relevant engineering (or equivalent) field
•    Accredited status with relevant national/state industry body
