Your Capabilities and Credentials

Required:

  • Applied general knowledge of upper Midwest native and invasive species, plant identification, natural areas, and ecology. 
  • Demonstrated experience with crew and/or volunteer leadership, mentorship, and effective team communication.
  • Demonstrated organization skills and capability of managing staff and resources to stay within project budgets and timelines.
  • Ability to operate and conduct routine preventative maintenance on a variety of equipment and tools that includes light and heavy-duty trucks and trailers, chainsaws / brushsaws, backpack herbicide sprayers, UTVs / ATVs, and tractors.
  • National Wildfire Coordinating Group Wildland Fire Intro (S-130 / S-190 / L-180).
  • A valid state drivers license and good driving record, Class A commercial driver’s license or ability to obtain within one month.
  • Previous experience utilizing iPads and familiarity with computers, Microsoft Office software, tablets, and GPS units.
  • Positive safety-first attitude.
  • Commitment to producing high quality in-field work products.
  • Ability to walk 4-6 miles per day over rough terrain and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather conditions.
  • Valid state Pesticide Applicator license, including applicable categories for herbicide application in natural areas and aquatic environments, or ability to obtain within one month.
  • Must complete a pre-employment drug screen.

Preferred:

  • Intermediate-advanced knowledge of upper Midwest native and invasive species, plant identification, natural areas, and ecology. 
  • Illinois Prescribed Burn Manager Certification. National Wildfire Coordinating Group Wildland Fire burn boss certifications (S-290).
  • Advanced equipment operation and experience conducting routine preventative maintenance on a variety of equipment and tools that includes light and medium-duty trucks and trailers, chainsaws / brushsaws, backpack herbicide sprayers, UTVs / ATVs, tractors, and skid steers.
  • ATV / UTV and chainsaw safety training.
  • OSHA 30-hour, OSHA 40-hour, and/or HAZWOPR certification.
  • Familiarity with best management practices for stormwater and sediment control including installation, maintenance, and inspection.
  • Valid Class A commercial driver's license and experience driving medium duty trucks and trailers.
  • Previous experience utilizing ESRI and ArcGIS -based software.

 

Education and Experience

  • 2+ years of experience in natural areas management techniques including herbicide applications, cutting / mowing, controlled burning, and native planting.
  • Undergraduate or Associates Degree in an environmental discipline, preferred.
